TSUKUBA, Japan (Kyodo) -- A scrap metal plant in eastern Japan went up in flames Wednesday, causing black smoke to billow into the air, firefighters said.

An emergency call was made around 6 a.m. from the plant in Joso, Ibaraki Prefecture. No injuries have been reported.

The plant specializes in dismantling discarded home appliances and other metal waste, police said. The fire started from a pile of microwaves and refrigerators on the plant's premises.

The factory is located in an area surrounded by fields and small woods.
