YAMAGATA -- A Yamagata University student was arrested on June 12 on suspicion of murdering a female ophthalmologist at her home in mid-May, police said.

Hiroki Kato, 23, a resident of the city of Yamagata, stands accused of murder and trespassing. Kato allegedly sneaked into the apartment of the victim, 50-year-old Chiemi Yaguchi, in Higashine, Yamagata Prefecture, in northwestern Japan on the morning of May 19, and repeatedly bashed her head with a blunt object, killing her, according to Yamagata Prefectural Police.

Yaguchi's body was found by her younger brother, who visited her apartment on the evening of the same day. It had been confirmed that Yaguchi had talked with a worker at a clinic she headed on the phone on the night of the previous day.
