OSAKA -- A police officer who fell unconscious and was in critical condition after being stabbed and robbed of his gun is recovering following surgery, Osaka Prefectural Police said on June 18.

The officer, 26-year-old Suzunosuke Kose, was allegedly stabbed by Yujiro Iimori, 33, several times in the parking lot of Senriyama police box where he works in Suita, Osaka Prefecture, at around 5:40 a.m. on June 16 and was admitted to a hospital, according to prefectural police.

He suffered particularly serious injuries to his lungs and underwent surgery the following day.

Kose was hired by Osaka Prefectural Police in February 2018 and was assigned to Suita Police Station in July that year. He was previously a member of Saga Prefectural Technical High School's rugby club. Ayumu Goromaru, a player with Yamaha Jubilo who also played at the same high school club, tweeted a message offering well wishes to Kose and for him to overcome his injuries.
