NICE, France (Kyodo) -- Having already secured a place in the last 16 of the tournament, Nadeshiko Japan finished the FIFA Women's World Cup group stage Wednesday with a 0-2 loss against England.

With the result at Stade de Nice, England clinched top spot in Group D and a seemingly more favorable path through the knockout rounds of the June 7-July 7 tournament in France. Japan finished second in the group on four points.

No. 7 Japan were guaranteed to finish no worse than among the four best third-place sides, who advance to the knockout stage along with the top two teams in each of the six groups, following the United States' 3-0 win over Group F opponents Chile on Sunday.
