TOKYO -- The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued a heavy rain warning for parts of the western Japan island of Shikoku due to a rain front and tropical depression developing into a typhoon, and is predicting thunderstorms and downpours across western Japan on June 27 and eastern Japan through about noon on June 28.

The agency is calling for people in these areas to be on their guard against landslides, flooding in low-lying areas and possible river flooding. It says strong winds and rough seas are also expected in the southwestern islands of Japan until about noon on June 27 and across western and eastern Japan through to the following day.

As of 3 a.m. on June 27, the tropical depression was located south-southeast of the Amami Islands in southwestern Japan. It had a central atmospheric pressure of 1,004 hectopascals and a maximum sustained wind speed of 15 meters per second (15 kilometers per hour). It was moving north-northeast at a speed of about 35 kph. A tropical depression becomes a typhoon when maximum sustained wind speeds top about 17 m/s (over 61 kph).

The JMA warned that over the 24-hour period ending at 6 a.m. on June 28, the Shikoku region was expected to be lashed with up to 250 millimeters of rain in the heaviest hit areas. The Tokai region in central Japan and Kinki region in western Japan were expected to see up to 200 millimeters of rain. Up to 130 millimeters was expected in southern Kyushu in southwestern Japan.

The northeastern Tohoku region, the Kanto-Koshin region including Tokyo, and northern Kyushu could see as much as 120 millimeters of rain over the same period, the agency warned, while up to 100 millimeters could fall in the Hokuriku region on the Sea of Japan side of Japan's main island Honshu, and in the Chugoku region in western Japan, where Hiroshima is located.
