Japan Photo Journal: Octopi of all nations

(Mainichi/Mihoko Kato)

A plate of 20 "takoyaki" octopus balls, each flavored with toppings related to the respective members of the Group of 20 major economies and decorated with tiny national flags, is seen at the restaurant Creo-ru in the Dotonbori central entertainment district of Osaka's Chuo Ward in this recent photo. While the western Japanese city and current G-20 summit host is known for traditional local foods, the battered octopus balls first among them, they were not on the menu at the June 28 official banquet of summit leaders. Instead, takoyaki, okonomiyaki (a Japanese-style savory pancake), kushiage (deep-fried foods on skewers), and other local "soul food" is on offer at summit venue Intex Osaka for free for delegates and press members.
