Japan music mogul Johnny Kitagawa hospitalized after stroke: agency

TOKYO -- Johnny Kitagawa, the 87-year-old president of the powerful Japanese talent agency Johnny & Associates, was rushed to hospital on June 18, the firm announced on July 1.

The music mogul, who has managed J-Pop supergroups including SMAP, KAT-TUN and Arashi, was diagnosed with a subarachnoid hemorrhage, a type of stroke. He remains hospitalized, according to the agency.

Kitagawa was born in Los Angeles. He got his start in the music business in the 1960s producing the boy band "Johnny's," consisting of four members of a baseball team he was coaching at the time. The team was also called "Johnny's."
