Japan Photo Journal: Deep popularity

(Mainichi/Chika Yokomi)

A kind of lumpfish that inhabits the deep sea, scientifically known as Eumicrotremus asperrimus, is seen at Echizen Matsushima Aquarium in the city of Sakai, Fukui Prefecture, on the Sea of Japan, in this recent photo. The fish, which has many projections on the surface of its body and a sucker on the bottom, is one of the contenders in an online popularity poll on unique animals from 20 zoos and aquariums across Japan. Having made it through the elimination round, the representative of the Fukui aquarium is now competing in the championship round with four other finalists.
