LDP wins 22 constituencies where only 1 seat was up for grabs

TOKYO -- The ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) won in 22 of 32 constituencies where only one seat was up for grabs in the July 21 House of Councillors election, while candidates backed jointly by key opposition parties captured the 10 others.

The opposition camp won seats in Iwate, Miyagi, Akita, Yamagata, Niigata, Nagano, Shiga, Ehime, Oita and Okinawa among the 32 districts. In the previous upper house poll in 2016, joint opposition candidates won 11 such electoral districts.

The outcome of constituencies where only one seat is contested is a key to winning an upper house election.
