OSAKA -- Young women added to the liveliness of the Tenjin Festival in Osaka's Kita Ward on July 23 as they carried a heavy portable shrine through the Tenjinbashisuji shopping arcade in the festival's "Gal Mikoshi" event.

About 80 women aged between 15 and 30, wearing traditional festival attire, hoisted up the mikoshi weighing some 200 kilograms as members of the public looked on.

Yuka Imazu, a 26-year-old nurse from the Osaka Prefecture city of Takatsuki, participated in the event for the first time.

"I was refreshed by the lively shouts. The mikoshi is heavy, and so I worked up a good sweat," she said.
