Watermelons are seen ready for dispatch at a sorting facility in the town of Oishida, Yamagata Prefecture, in northwestern Japan, in this recent photo. Shipments of the fruit produced in the neighboring city of Obanazawa and the surrounding area have reached a peak in the prefecture. The area is Japan's largest producer of watermelons in summer. A total of about 2.2 million watermelons will be shipped from the district mainly to the regions of Kanto, centering on Tokyo, and Kansai around Osaka, which have the two largest populations in Japan.
