Japan Photo Journal: Light of memory

(Mainichi/Daiki Takikawa)

Mourners place paper lanterns in the Kanna River in the village of Ueno, Gunma Prefecture, in the early evening of Aug. 11, 2019 to commemorate the victims of a Japan Airlines crash that claimed the lives of 520 people on Aug. 12, 1985, and to pray for transport safety. The crash in the mountains of Gunma Prefecture remains the deadliest single air accident in aviation history. In the Aug. 11 event, surviving family members and other participants wrote messages including "We will never repeat this kind of accident again," and "Value the only life we have" on some 300 lanterns that were then set afloat on the river.
