Japan Photo Journal: Just chill

(Mainichi/Toshiki Miyama)

An icy "natural refrigerator" used by generations past for storage is seen lit up in the Narusawa Ice Cave, a government-designated natural monument in Narusawa, Yamanashi Prefecture. Located at the base of Mount Fuji in central Japan, the temperature inside is a brisk 0 to 3 degrees Celsius, making it popular among tourists hoping to escape from Japan's scorching summer heat. Twenty-one meters underground at its lowest point and 153 meters long, the cave was formed by a lava flow during the eruption of Mount Nagao, a lateral volcano of Mount Fuji, in 864.
