Japan Photo Journal: Glowing tribute

(Mainichi/Naohiro Yamada)

Children hold sparklers above candles in Hiroshima's Asaminami Ward on the night of Aug. 20, 2019, to pray for the victims of landslides that struck hillside areas of the city five years ago, killing a total of 77 residents. About 200 people participated in a memorial event near a dam built after the disaster at a district in the ward and offered a silent prayer before burning sparklers together. Kanon Nakano, 9, a local resident and fourth grader at the municipal Bairin Elementary School, joined the event with her mother and said, "I want to remember the landslide disaster as many people died in it."
