Commercial hand-turned ice-shaving machines are prepared for shipping amid the late summer heat at Ikenaga Iron Works Co., one of just two Japanese makers still making them, in Osaka's Higashinari Ward. According to the firm, while its main products are electric ice shavers, the number of inquiries about the commercial manual types -- which allow fine-tuning of the shaved ice's consistency -- has been increasing due to a recent boom in the cool desserts. This year the factory has already shipped at least 500 of the machines, more than in all of 2018. President Kazuo Ikenaga, 59, said, "I hope people will enjoy hearing the sound of shaving ice and the gentle touch of the treat on their tongues."
