Police launch murder probe after couple stabbed at home in eastern Japan

YACHIYO, Ibaraki -- A man was killed and his wife was seriously injured, apparently after an assailant stabbed them at their home here, police said on Aug. 24.

Ibaraki Prefectural Police have launched a murder investigation and are searching for the culprit. A knife believed to be the murder weapon was found at the scene.

Emergency services received a call from a 42-year-old man living in Yachiyo, Ibaraki Prefecture at around 3:15 a.m. on Aug. 24, reporting that his parents had been stabbed.

The couple, 76-year-old Isao Osato and his 73-year-old wife, whose name was not immediately disclosed, were found collapsed and bleeding from the chest and stomach. They were taken to hospital with serious wounds. Osato was subsequently confirmed dead.

The couple's son was living in a separate residence on his parents' property, located in a rural area situated about 8.5 kilometers away from Shimotsuma Station on the Kanto Railway Line.
