Bulgaria's Ivanov wins Italian piano contest, Japan's Kuwahara 2nd

ROME (Kyodo) -- Bulgarian Emanuil Ivanov won first prize in an international piano competition for young pianists that concluded in Italy on Friday, the 20-year-old beating two other finalists including Japan's Shiori Kuwahara.

    Kuwahara, 23, from Tokyo came in second at this year's Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Competition which started on Aug. 28 in the northern city of Bolzano with 22 entrants, according to its organizer.

    Georgia's Giorgi Gigashvili, 18, won third prize.

    In addition to cash prizes, some of the candidates were also awarded special prizes such as opportunities to take part in concerts at prestigious international musical institutions.
