MITO -- A couple was found dead at their home in Sakai, Ibaraki Prefecture, early on Sept. 23, sparking a murder investigation.
At around 12:40 a.m. on Sept. 23, a woman pleading for help called police from a residence in a farming area of Sakai, northeast of Tokyo. Officers from the Sakai Police Station dispatched to the house found Miwa Kobayashi, 50, and her 48-year-old husband Mitsunori Kobayashi collapsed in their bedroom on the second floor. They were confirmed dead at the scene.
Miwa had had her neck slashed, while her husband had sustained cuts to his face and neck. Investigators believe it was Miwa who called police.
According to police, the couple lived with their two daughters, aged 21 and 11, and their 13-year-old son. The son sustained injuries to his legs and arms. He was taken to hospital along with his younger sister, but their conditions are not said to be life-threatening. The siblings were in a shared room on the second floor.
The 21-year-old daughter, who was on the home's first floor, was unharmed. Police suspect that the family was attacked while they were asleep.
