TOKYO -- Ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Secretary-General Toshihiro Nikai called the widespread damage from Typhoon Hagibis "tolerable" during an emergency party board meeting on Oct. 13.
"It (the damage) appears to be tolerable compared with the predictions, but there is still considerable damage over a wide area" of Japan, Nikai told the meeting on measures to cope with Hagibis' aftermath.
Japanese Communist Party (JCP) secretariat head Akira Koike immediately criticized Nikai's comment on Twitter, posting, "Is this heavy damage 'tolerable'? Is it OK to have such a perception?"
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Nikai said of his use of the term "tolerable," "I meant if compared to natural disasters that upend Japan. It is very serious when even one person dies."
