TOKYO -- Yukuo Hattori, mayor of the capital's Taito Ward, issued an apology on Oct. 15 for the "inadequate response" by a public evacuation center that refused entry to at least two homeless men seeking shelter from Typhoon Hagibis.
"I'm sorry," Hattori said in the written apology about the Oct. 12 incident. He also revealed that an advisory committee had been set up in the Taito Ward Office to "consider measures to help all people and respond appropriately."
The issue was brought up in the Oct. 15 House of Councillors Budget Committee meeting, during which Prime Minister Shinzo Abe commented, "It's desirable that all evacuation centers appropriately allow the entrance of everyone who is evacuating from a disaster."
