TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Takuya Haneda, a bronze medalist in the men's Canadian singles at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, secured himself a berth on the Japanese canoe slalom team for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics on Sunday.
Haneda passed the Olympic qualifying standard at the NHK Cup canoe slalom competition held on the newly built Kasai Canoe Slalom Center in Tokyo. The 32-year-old will be making his fourth straight Olympic appearance.
Ayano Sato will be representing Japan on the women's team. The Tokyo Olympics will feature women's canoe events for the first time as part of a move toward gender equality in sports.
