KYOTO -- An annual event where "geiko," or geisha, and "maiko," or apprentice geisha, watch kabuki shows as part of their studies was held at the Minamiza Theatre in this city's Higashiyama Ward on Dec. 2.

Some 75 geiko and maiko from Miyagawacho, one of five major traditional entertainment districts in Kyoto, appeared in elevated seats at the side of the theatre.

Geiko and maiko from other districts of the ancient capital, such as Pontocho, Gion Kobu, Kamishichiken and Gion Higashi, will also study live kabuki sometime before Dec. 9.
