Japan Photo Journal: Trial bells

(Mainichi/Ai Kawahira)

A total of 17 priests work together to ring a bell weighing some 70 metric tons during a test run at the Chion-in temple in Kyoto's Higashiyama Ward on Dec. 27, 2019, ahead of a traditional New Year's Eve bell event. The giant bell, cast in the beginning of Edo period in the 17th century, measures about 3.3 meters high, about 2.8 meters in diameter, and is about 30 centimeters thick. On Dec. 31, about 20 monks, working in rotation, will pull the main rope hanging from a large wooden hammer to ring out the old year with 108 strikes starting at 10:40 p.m.
