Japan Photo Journal: New Year reflections

(Mainichi/Naotsune Umemura)

A Japanese macaque soaks in a hot spring bath at Jigokudani Yaen-Koen, a park where visitors can see wild snow monkeys close up, in the central Japan town of Yamanouchi, Nagano Prefecture, in this recent photo. A mountain road to the facility was cut off in October 2019 about 2 kilometers away from its parking area due to a landslide caused by Typhoon Hagibis. While operations at the park resumed three days later after reconstruction work was carried out on the road, half of the observation area at the facility had been closed because the riverbank was washed away by a swollen river. The repair work was completed about two months later. The park is open every day from around 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in winter. For inquiries, call the office on 0269-33-4379 (in Japanese).
