That's rich: Rare 'financial good luck' catfish on display at Kochi nature park for New Year

SHIMANTO, Kochi -- A rare yellow catfish said to bring financial good luck is on display at the "Gakuyukan Akitsuio" museum at Dragonfly Nature Park in this western Japanese city for the New Year.

The fish's yellow color is the result of a genetic mutation in the "silurus lithophilus" species of catfish native to Japan. The park operator received the pecuniarily propitious piscine pet from the Kyoto Aquarium in the city of Kyoto in July 2014, and the fish's skin tone has steadily intensified since.

The "golden catfish" is on display over the end-of-year and New Year's period, and the museum has erected a Shinto torii gate and an offering box for visitors to pray for a prosperous 2020. The New Year's display will wrap up on Jan. 13.
