Japan Photo Journal: Return of the rodents

(Mainichi/Takashi Seido)

Guinea pigs march across a roughly 21-meter-long bridge decorated with New Year's ornaments at a children's zoo in Chikozan Park in the city of Sayama, Saitama Prefecture, north of Tokyo, on Jan. 5, 2020. The event, popular among tourists, is held in celebration of the Chinese zodiac Year of the Rat. Guinea pigs cross the bridge to return to their pen from a section of the zoo where visitors can pet and hold the animals. Children and their parents crowded both ends of the bridge, taking photos of the 25 guinea pigs returning to their shed, calling them "cute" and saying that "they bring good luck." The animals cross the bridge at 11:30 a.m., 2:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. each day the park is open. The New Year's decorations can be seen until Jan. 13.
