Japan Photo Journal: Social butterflies

(Mainichi/Kazuaki Kanda)

Ceylon Blue Glassy Tiger butterflies are seen overwintering on branches in a forest on Amami Oshima Island in the southern Japan prefecture of Kagoshima on Jan. 8, 2020. In Japan, the butterflies inhabit islands between Kyushu in southwestern Japan and Taiwan. The insects have a wingspan of about 10 centimeters. They gather in places sheltered from the wind when the temperature is lower than 15 degrees Celsius, and flutter about together on warm days. The butterflies usually spend the winter in groups until around March.
