BEIJING (Kyodo) -- The new coronavirus has infected 1,716 health workers, killing six of them, China's health authorities said Friday.

Medical workers in China have faced the risk of being infected as the country battles a surge in infection cases as well as deaths resulting from the COVID-19 virus.

Li Wenliang, a Chinese doctor in Wuhan who was an early whistleblower about the outbreak, died on Feb. 7 from the illness he warned about, prompting an outpouring of grief and outrage online in China.
