TOKYO -- Over a third of Japanese companies in a recent survey are worried that the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics may not go ahead as planned due to the coronavirus pandemic.

When asked what worries they had about the ongoing impact of the coronavirus, a total of 5,615 or 36% of the 15,597 companies surveyed by Tokyo Shoko Research Ltd. between March 2 and 8 answered, "The Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics being canceled."

All the companies submitted their answers before U.S. President Donald Trump's March 12 suggestion that the Tokyo Games be postponed for a year.

"If we had done the survey now, I think the ratio of firms concerned about the games being canceled would be higher," the Tokyo Shoko Research staffer in charge of the poll commented.
