TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Forty-seven more coronavirus infections were confirmed in Tokyo on Thursday, the biggest number for a single day, a metropolitan government official said.

A surge in the number of cases has prompted the capital to ask Tokyoites to stay at home this weekend, sparking fears it may follow other major cities in the world in imposing a lockdown to contain the virus.

The latest figure topped the previous single-day record for Tokyo just marked Wednesday when it announced 41 cases.
