Japan Photo Journal: Capybara cool

(Mainichi/Koji Sato)

A capybara which has recently arrived at the municipal zoo in Fukuchiyama, Kyoto Prefecture, western Japan, is seen during a March 27, 2020 press event. The facility had been closed due to the spread of the novel coronavirus but reopened on March 28, when the city's virus countermeasures were partly lifted. The capybara is a 3-year-old male, measuring about 60 centimeters in length and weighing some 20 kilograms. He is easy going and friendly with people, so the zoo plans to allow visitors to feed him. Zoo director Toshikuni Nihonmatsu said, "His blank expression is cute. He is sure to brighten and soften visitors' moods."
