According to locals, peach trees don't normally bloom in the area until after cherry blossom trees have shed their petals. The park in Yamanashi Prefecture is normally packed with tourists at this time of year, but was virtually empty on the day amid fears of the novel coronavirus. A local taxi driver bemoaned the lack of visitors to the area, saying, "The train station only has a few taxis waiting here now not because we're busy, there are no passengers. If I don't drive I can't earn even one yen."
