TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Japan's household spending in February fell 0.3 percent from a year earlier, down for the fifth consecutive month, government data showed Tuesday.

Spending by households with two or more people in real terms was 271,735 yen ($2,490), the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications said.

Household spending is a key indicator of private consumption, which accounts for more than half of Japan's gross domestic product.
