Jogger injured in bear attack in southwestern Japan

YAMAGUCHI -- A local man in the city of Shunan in the southwestern Japan Prefecture of Yamaguchi was attacked by a bear while out for a run on the evening of June 24.

The man, 46, sustained injuries to his chest, back, left arm and other places after he was assaulted from behind by a bear while out jogging at about 6 p.m. His life is reportedly not in danger.

According to the city government, the man managed to return home by himself, and his family then called the 119 emergency number. The bear appears to have been an Asian black bear, and it is said to have disappeared back into the hills. The city government is ramping up its patrols of the area, and it is also warning locals in the vicinity of the incident to be vigilant.
