Escaped wildcat captured in central Japan after 17 days on loose

A pet serval, which was captured after 17 days on the loose, is seen in this photo provided by the Shizuoka Municipal Government.

SHIZUOKA -- A pet serval that had been on the loose since June 27 in this central Japan city was captured on July 13.

The 1-year-old male wildcat was found near Shizuoka Heliport in the city's Aoi Ward, approximately 1 kilometer from its owner's home. After receiving an emergency call, officers from Shizuoka Chuo Police Station and city officials hedged in the animal, which is about 70 centimeters long and weighs roughly 10 kilograms, with nets, and captured it with help from its owner.

Permission from an administrative body is required to keep serval cats as pets due to the potential danger they pose to humans.
