HIROSHIMA (Kyodo) -- Allen Kuri worked his way through seven shutout innings to pick up his second win of the season as the Hiroshima Carp beat the Chunichi Dragons 6-1 in the Central League on Monday.
Kuri (2-2) allowed a runner in scoring position in four of his seven innings but managed to keep Chunichi off the scoreboard after allowing six hits and one walk in a 119-pitch effort, fanning seven at Mazda Stadium.
Hiroshima, having led in the first inning when Ryuhei Matsuyama singled in a run off Chunichi starter Shinnosuke Ogasawara (0-1), scored both the next two runs after Kuri got himself out of tight spots with strikeouts.
The right-hander had runners on second and third with two outs in the third when he struck out Toshiki Abe looking before Hisayoshi Chono, who scored the opening run with a double in the first, again doubled to plate Hiroshima's second run in the bottom of the inning.
Kuri again had multiple runners on base in the fourth after giving up a hit and walk but again struck out, this time Takuya Kinoshita, looking before the Carp added another run with a passed ball.
Ogasawara, pitching for the first time this season, got the hook after four innings allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits and a walk while striking out five.
Shuhei Takahashi singled in Chunichi's only run in the eighth off Carp reliever Atsuya Horie, but Shogo Sakakura's bases-loaded single plated two more for the Carp in the bottom of the inning before Ryoma Nishikawa's RBI single put the result beyond doubt.
At Yokohama Stadium, reliever Yuki Kuniyoshi (2-1) hit a two-run double to break a 1-1 tie in the fourth en route to earning his second win of the season as the DeNA Bay Stars beat Hanshin Tigers 6-4.
