TOKYO -- Tokyo marked a total of 258 new coronavirus infections on Aug. 21, after recording more than 300 the day before, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government said.
Japan's capital saw 339 new infections on Aug. 20. The single-day high for Tokyo stands at 472, recorded on Aug. 1.
The capital saw an average of 345.1 infections per day in the first week of August and 280.3 per day in the second week. Daily infections in the capital have not fallen below 100 since July 9.
Tokyo has registered over 18,000 infections of the new virus in total -- more than any other prefecture in Japan. The number of COVID-19 patients in the capital who are currently hospitalized with severe symptoms now totals 33.
