Tokyo reports 163 more coronavirus infections on Sept. 16

TOKYO -- Japan's capital recorded 163 new cases of the novel coronavirus on Sept. 16, the metropolitan government announced.

    The new infections came after Tokyo saw 191 cases on Sept. 15. The daily average in Tokyo for the first week of September stood at 147.4, and rose to 176.3 in the month's second week.

    Tokyo saw a monthly high of 8,126 new cases of the novel coronavirus in August, averaging out to about 262.1 cases per day. A total of 6,466 cases, or an average of about 208.6 per day, were logged in the city in July.

    The capital has recorded over 23,000 infections of the new virus in total -- the most among Japan's 47 prefectures. There were 21 patients in Tokyo hospitalized with severe COVID-19 symptoms as of Sept. 15.
