TOKYO -- A total of 88 new cases of the novel coronavirus were recorded in Japan's capital on Sept. 22, marking the second day in a row for the figure to fall below 100, the metropolitan government announced.
The new cases came after Tokyo saw 98 infections on Sept. 21. Tokyo's daily average for the first week of September stood at 147.4, and climbed to 176.3 for the second week of the month. In the third week the daily average dipped slightly to 174.7.
Tokyo has registered more than 24,000 infections of the new virus altogether -- the highest level among Japan's 47 prefectures. There were 27 patients in Tokyo hospitalized with severe COVID-19 symptoms as of Sept. 21.
