Japan Photo Journal: Bamboo-zled

(Mainichi/Yasuhiro Onishi)

Bamboo lanterns are seen lit amid the rain during a pre-opening of the "Iga-Ueno Akari to Shinobi no Jokamachi" illumination event at Sugawara Shrine in the city of Iga, Mie Prefecture, central Japan, on Oct. 8, 2020. An official lighting ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. on Oct. 11 at the shrine displaying works by bamboo lantern producer Kohei Kawabuchi. The event in the downtown of the city -- a former castle town -- featuring over 1,000 brightly lit lanterns and traditional Japanese umbrellas, was initially planned to be held on Oct. 10 and 11, but was mostly canceled on its first day due to the approach of Typhoon Chan-Hom. It will be held on the second day, except for some events.
