TOKYO -- The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has raised its coronavirus alert level to stage 4, its highest level, for the first time in two months as the number of infections in the capital is surging.
Level 4 indicates a status where "infections are spreading." The decision to raise the warning level came after the metropolitan government held a meeting with experts on the afternoon of Nov. 19. The metropolitan government deemed it necessary to raise the alert level as the number of new infections and positive cases without clear infection routes are rapidly increasing.
Tokyo saw a record high of 493 new infections on Nov. 18 and the capital was expected to see another record high of over 500 infections on Nov. 19.
