Visitors are seen looking at the lights on the first day of annual "Sendai Pageant of Starlight" along Jozenji-dori Avenue in Aoba Ward in the Miyagi Prefecture capital of Sendai, on Dec. 18, 2020. Organizers skipped the usual lighting ceremony and other events for the pageant's 35th edition to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Some 600,000 LED lights decorating 160 Japanese zelkova trees were turned on at 7 p.m. A 7-year-old first grader from Sendai's Taihaku Ward said, "The lights came on and it was beautiful. It made me smile." The pageant will be held for a total of 19 days, seven days shorter than last year, and it will continue after the New Years for the first time ever, to prevent crowding.
