OSAKA -- Osaka Gov. Hirofumi Yoshimura told reporters on Jan. 4 that he doesn't intend to urge the central government to declare a state of emergency in the prefecture over a rise in coronavirus cases, saying, "Osaka is, at the moment, managing to contain the rapid surge in infections."

Regarding Yoshimura's request for restaurants serving alcohol in the city of Osaka to shorten business hours until Jan. 11, the governor said he intends to decide on whether to extend the request period following a task force meeting on Jan. 8.
