Japan Photo Journal: 20-meter-tall icicles on frozen falls in a treat for climbers
(Mainichi Japan)
Climbers take photos in front of the giant icicles formed as part of the frozen Nanshogataki falls in the Gouradani valley in the southwest Japanese town of Umi, Fukuoka Prefecture, on Jan. 10, 2021, after temperatures plunged in the area. The icicles, measuring some 20 meters tall, typically form in January through February as melted snow and water that seeps through the rocks trickle down the rock face on Mount Sangun at an altitude of 724 meters and slowly freeze.
