1 dead, several injured after pileup amid blizzard conditions in north Japan

SENDAI -- One person died and 11 people were taken to the hospital to receive emergency care after dozens of vehicles were involved in a pileup amid blizzard conditions in northern Japan on the morning of Jan. 19.
The pileup occurred at about 11:50 a.m. on the Tohoku Expressway in the Miyagi Prefecture city of Osaki. According to the prefectural police expressway traffic unit and firefighters, the accident caused multiple injuries, while about 130 trucks, cars and other vehicles were left stranded across a distance of some 800 meters.
A blizzard had hit the area at the time of the accident and it is believed visibility was poor. The accident resulted in traffic being halted on the expressway between the Furukawa and Tsukidate interchanges.
