TOKYO -- Musician Ryuichi Sakamoto, 69, has been diagnosed with rectal cancer, his official website announced on Jan. 21.

The cancer was discovered in 2020, and successfully operated on in January this year. Sakamoto is currently reported to be in hospital and receiving treatment. In 2014, he had oropharyngeal cancer -- located in part of the throat -- but it went into remission.

Remarks from Sakamoto were included, in which he wrote, "From now on, I'll be living alongside cancer. But, I am hoping to make music for a little while longer. Thank you all so much for your continuing support."
