TOKYO -- Japan's capital registered 434 coronavirus infections on Feb. 11, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government said.

The new cases followed 491 infections recorded in the capital the previous day. The single-day high for Tokyo stands at 2,447 cases, registered on Jan. 7.

Tokyo is trying to bring a third wave of coronavirus infections under control following earlier surges in April and August last year. In January, the capital saw a total of 39,664 infections, more than double the number counted in December and the most Tokyo has seen in a single month following the start of the pandemic in spring 2020. In the first week of February, the capital recorded an average of 572 new cases per day.

The 105,458 total infections reported in Tokyo is the most among Japan's 47 prefectures, with the overall death toll in the capital reaching 1,078 as of Feb. 10. As of the same day, there were 2,553 patients hospitalized in Tokyo with COVID-19, including 103 with severe symptoms.
