Tokyo reports another 350 coronavirus infections on Feb. 16

TOKYO -- Japan's capital recorded 350 new cases of the coronavirus on Feb. 16, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government said. It was the tenth day in a row the daily tally has been under 500.

    The new cases came after the capital registered 266 new infections on Feb. 15. In the first week of February, Japan's capital saw an average of 572 new cases per day, dropping to 380 in the second week.

    The single-day high for Tokyo stands at 2,447 cases, registered on Jan. 7 amid a third wave of infections. In January, Tokyo saw a total of 39,664 new cases of the virus, the most for a single month since the start of the pandemic in spring 2020.

    Altogether, Tokyo has recorded 107,959 infections, more than any of Japan's 46 other prefectures. The overall death toll in the capital stood at 1,137 as of Feb. 15. A total of 2,341 patients were hospitalized in Tokyo with COVID-19 as of the same day, 97 with severe symptoms.
