TOKYO -- Japan's capital recorded 327 new cases of the coronavirus on Feb. 20, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government said. It was the 14th day in a row the daily tally has been under 500.
The new cases came after Tokyo registered 353 new infections on Feb. 19. In the first week of February, Japan's capital saw an average of 572 new cases per day. The figure dropped to 380 in the second week.
The single-day high for Tokyo stands at 2,447 cases, registered on Jan. 7 amid a third wave of infections. In January, Tokyo saw a total of 39,664 new cases of the virus, the most for a single month since the start of the pandemic in spring 2020.
Altogether, Tokyo has recorded 109,462 infections, more than any of Japan's 46 other prefectures. The overall death toll in the capital stood at 1,221 as of Feb. 19. A total of 2,097 patients were hospitalized in Tokyo with COVID-19 as of the same day, and of those, 84 had severe symptoms.
