TOKYO -- Japan's capital reported 213 new cases of the coronavirus on Feb. 24, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government said.
The new cases came after Tokyo registered 275 new infections on Feb. 23. In the first week of February, Japan's capital saw an average of 572 new cases per day. The figure dropped to 380 in the second week, and fell again to 341.6 in the third.
The single-day high for Tokyo stands at 2,447 cases, registered on Jan. 7 amid a third wave of infections. In January, Tokyo saw a total of 39,664 new cases of the virus, the most for a single month since the start of the pandemic in spring 2020.
Altogether, Tokyo has recorded 110,400 infections, the most among Japan's 47 prefectures. The overall death toll in the capital stood at 1,285 as of Feb. 23. A total of 1,963 patients were hospitalized in Tokyo with COVID-19 as of the same day, and of those, 77 had severe symptoms.
